Action Mesothelioma Day - 27-02-2008
Mesothelioma - or meso , is a chest cancer that develops up to 40 years after exposure to asbestos. Cases are set to peak in the next decade in the UK. The British Lung Foundation is holding Action Mesothelioma Day today 27th February. Mesothelioma is a malignant lung disease which results mainly from exposure to asbestos. Someone dies every five hours from mesothelioma in the UK, and this rate is increasing. The Charter, amongst other things, argues for more and better rights for sufferers, calls upon the Government to have mesothelioma made a national priority by the Cancer Tsar, ensure the Health and safety executive vigorously enforce existing regulations on asbestos and calls upon employers to work with unions and individuals to ensure enforcement of current regulations to safeguard all employees, and identify all asbestos in their properties and organise its safe removal where practical or necessary work is being carried out.
