MOD recruiting apprentices - 18-02-2009

School leavers interested in supporting the UK's Armed Forces on the frontline could find just the job as the MoD is extending its recruitment campaign for apprentices to work on some of the UK's most advanced military equipment projects

MoD Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) - which already employs 7,500 staff at its north Bristol headquarters and some 24,500 personnel at locations across the UK - is recruiting more than 170 apprentices across the UK over the next two years to undertake a three year advanced apprenticeship in engineering.

The scheme is designed to train people for engineering posts at the Abbey Wood headquarters and across other DE&S sites where the business demands. On completion they will fill engineering management roles liaising with the military users and commercial suppliers of equipment managed by DE&S teams.

General Sir Kevin O Donoghue, the Chief of Defence Materiel, who leads DE&S, said:

"The apprentice scheme is vital to ensuring we have skilled and qualified people across a number of engineering disciplines to support our troops. The successful applicants will be trained to fill roles within DE&S teams that directly or indirectly support front line equipment acquisition. In addition to meeting DE&S' needs, this initiative also contributes to satisfying the government's policy to increase the number of apprenticeships available across the public and private sectors."

Over each of the next two years we intend to recruit

  • 70 technician apprentices in the Bristol area

  • 19 technician apprentices split between the Scottish and Plymouth regions

There is also a plan to recruit a further 16 across the Midlands and Southern England in 2010.

Mark Skinner, DE&S Apprentice Team Leader said:

"In these economically challenging times we are proud to be able to offer these exciting employment opportunities. These positions are vital to us in developing the engineers we need to support our business in MoD. As an ex-Technician Apprentice myself, I am delighted to see this increased investment. We offer an impressive variety of learning experiences across many engineering disciplines and our Apprenticeships represent a pathway into a challenging career in MoD. "

Most new apprentices are expected to remain in engineering and project management roles and some may progress to more senior positions. On completion of their apprenticeship they will be qualified Engineering Technicians and may well use this as a stepping stone to Incorporated and/or Chartered Engineer status through their career.
