Chocolate shop signs up to safety campaign - 23-06-2009
A Canterbury chocolate shop, Madame Oiseau, has teamed up with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to show good health and safety in practice as part of the Shattered Lives campaign.

HSE Principal Inspector, Mike Walters, met with the owner and staff at the chocolatiere to see how they prevent slips and trips whilst working in the food manufacturing sector - one of the high risk areas of work.

Last year in Kent, 1,107 people suffered an injury following a slip, trip or fall at work. This has prompted the launch of the awareness raising campaign by the HSE.

Madame Oiseau has a flawless health and safety record since setting up shop in Canterbury in 2005. To protect staff, the shop takes simple measures to clear up any spills immediately and keeps work areas clean and tidy. The shop is a member of Produced in Kent, an organisation promoting local businesses and raising awareness of local produce available to Kent's residents.

Mike Walters, HSE Principal Inspector for Kent, said:

"Slips, trips and falls in workplaces can cause serious injuries to staff. It is good to see that a small business has put in place simple measures to help prevent this type of accident.

"Workers at Madame Oiseau have adopted the 'see it, sort it' approach. If someone sees a spillage on the floor, they clear it up. This is a common sense approach to a serious health and safety issue."

Sandrine May, owner of Madame Oiseau, said:

"Here at Madame Oiseau, we are pleased to support this HSE campaign to encourage workplace safety. We are proud of our health and safety record and wish for other small businesses like ours to take note of the statistics and advice to ensure their staff are also safe at work."

Julie Monkman, Manager Produced in Kent, said:

"Excellent health and safety standards are critical in the running of any successful business and particularly in the food manufacturing sector. We are delighted that a Produced in Kent member is being recognised by the HSE as a shining example of good health and safety practice in Kent."

Fatalities and serious injuries arising from slips, trips and fall incidents cost the South East around £78,615,000 last year. Three people died and 1,830 suffered major injury as a result of a slip, trip or fall from height in workplaces in the region last year. A further 3,473 sustained injuries that kept them off work for three days or more.
