Michael Millward discusses CIPD predictions for 2009 on BBC Radion York - 29-12-2008 | Abeceder managing director and Secretary of the North Yorkshire Branch of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) joined Elly Fiorentini on the BBC Radio York Drive Time show to discuss research published by the CIPD which predicts large numbers of job losses, and pay freezes or cuts in pay for those who escape unemployment during 2009.
Mr Millward explained that the CIPD research, which had been conducted nationally was reflected in the views of many Yorkshire HR Directors who at a meeting on 19th December had predicted large numbers of job losses in the Yorkshire region in the first few months of 2009.
If anything Mr Millward said we are already seeing the start of the rise in unemployment. Hardly a day goes by without more redundancies being announced and many companies have extended their Christmas and New Year holidays in an attempt to save cash.
The issue for people in North Yorkshire is not how many jobs will be lost, or whether they will get a pay rise in 2009. People need to concern themselves with how they can make themselves more valuable to their employer so that they are not selected if redundancies become necessary. And how if their job is made redundant they can make themselves more attractive to a potential employer.
The answer is for those in employment to make sure that they are part of the solution not the problem, by embracing change and learning the new skills the business needs to remain competitive.
People who find themselves without a job need to stay positive. It is important to be open-minded about potential opportunities and take every opportunity they can to gain the skills and knowledge that will make them a more attractive employee for a prospective new employer.
