Michael Millward on BBC Radio York for CIPD - 09-08-2010 |
Abeceder managing director Michael Millward was interviewed by Elly Fiorentini on BBC Radio York Drive show this evening in his role as Chairman of the North Yorkshire Branch of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
Mr Millward was asked to comment on the regional implications of new research from the CIPD that predicts that jobs that the public sector makes redundant will not be replaced with new jobs created in the private sector.
It just isn’t possible explained Mr Millward who has experience of working in both sectors. At the beginning of the recession private sector companies where the first to start shedding employees as they attempted to restructure their businesses in order to survive. Now they have learnt new ways to work using IT and streamlined procedures, so as business recovers they will not need additional employees.
Asked if he thought that there were likely to be more redundancies in the private sector, Mr Millward said that was a difficult question to answer, but that it was possible. The key thing for anyone who is made redundant to remember is that there are jobs available. You have to stay positive. If you think you won’t get a job, well you won’t.
