Michael Millward on BBC Radio York Breakfast Show - 15-02-2011
Abeceder managing director Michael Millward joined presenter Adam Tomlinson on the BBC Radio York Breakfast Show this morning to discuss an announcement by employees at York City Council that they hope the Council will allow them to adopt changes in the way in which they work in an attempt to save the jobs of colleagues who face redundancy as a result of Government budget cuts.

Mr. Millward applauded the move, which has trade union backing as an admirable example of team work and the collective approach of the Big Society. He explained that although it is a dramatic personal step, offering to take a pay cut in order to help save a colleagues job, it is something that is increasingly common. When the private sector cut back last year many companies asked employees what their preferred solution would be. Many companies saw employees deciding to share the pain rather than see a small group suffer.

Employers benefit from the approach which not only retains key skills during difficult times it also means that employers save on recruitment costs when the good times return. They simply increase the hours of their existing employees.

Some people who find themselves in this situation see it as an opportunity to spend more time with their families, or even to start second careers, perhaps turning a hobby into a business.

The move proposed by the people at York City Council should prove to be a benefit for everyone suggested Mr. Millward
