BBC Radio York Redundancy and Find a Job Road Show - 23-02-2009 |
Abeceder managing director Michael Millward kicked off the BBC Radio York Redundancy/Find a Job Road Show by talking to Adam Tomlinson on the Breakfast Show.
Mr Millward explained that although there are companies making jobs redundant there are across North Yorkshire numerous companies that have vacancies to fill.
Speaking as the secretary of the North Yorkshire branch of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Mr Millward described how although there may be an increasing number of people looking for work, local employers are still reporting to the branch that they are finding it difficult to recruit people with the skills they need.
Mr Millward emphasised that everyone regardless of whether they are looking for work or currently in employment needs to remember that the best way to make themselves attractive to an employer is to ensure that they keep their skills and knowledge up to date.
As the economy changes, businesses also have to change and that means that they need employees who have the ability to learn new ways of working.
Later Mr Millward joined Russell Walker on the BBC Radio York Mid-Morning show to answer listeners’ questions about job hunting.
Asked by a listener to comment on news reports that the over fifties would find it more difficult than other age groups to find work in a recession Mr Millward said that whilst there may be some employers who were short-sighted enough to overlook the talents of potential employees he also knew from his conversations with recruiters that there are many more employers who actively seek to attract applications from older candidates.
Mr Millward also pointed out that it is only a few months ago news reports were claiming that it was younger workers who found it most difficult to find work.
Mr Millward concluded his day at BBC Radio York, by spending lunch time at the BBC Radio York bus in Parliament Street York meeting listeners and giving them the opportunity to have their curriculum vitas reviewed.
Recruiters from local employers CPP and Northern Rail joined Mr Millward at the BBC Bus, along with representatives from employment agency Manpower and Future Prospects the drop in centre for work advice operated by York City Council.
