Abeceder goes Meat Free on Monday - 26-06-2009

The Abeceder team has decided to join in the Meat Free Monday initiative.

Meat Free Monday is part of attempts by Abeceder to strive to be a carbon neutral business.

Between 20 and 30 percent of green house gases globally are according to the Food Climate Research Network produced by producing and transporting food from the farm to the fork.

Half of these green house gases are actually produced by the farm animals. So the more meat we want to eat the more farm animals need to be raised and the more green house gases are produced.

So by cutting out meat one day a week the smaller our carbon footprint as individuals and as a team is going to be explained Abeceder managing director Michael Millward.

Between 1961 and 2007 the world's population increased by a factor of 2:2, but meat consumption increased four fold and poultry consumption by ten times.

Livestock farming at every level has been recognised by The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as ‘one of the top two or three biggest contributors to global warming.

'Individually we already have a fairly healthy diet,' said Michael Millward, 'I eat plenty of fresh friut and vegetables and consider the food miles involved in every meal.'

Now meat will be removed from the menus of all Abeceder events that we hold on the first working day of the week.

It's a small contribution to providing a solution to a major global problem said Michael Millward but to build a better world in the future we all need to make changes in our lifestyles now.

It doesn't seem like very much to do, but the group Compassion in World Farming estimates that if the average UK household halved its consumption of meat this would cut more emissions than if car use was cut in half. By making a simple change in the way we eat, we are as individuals and a team are taking part in a world changing campaign where what’s good for us is also good for the planet.
